CHRONICLE – MAY 23rd, TUESDAY

At 10 o'clock the Divine Liturgy, written in English, began. Traditionally, after the initial exclamation, Father Ambrose sang the ancient English "Christ is risen".

The chorus performs this liturgy with great inspiration, since its music brings a feeling of something uplifting and festive, in the best sense of the Orthodox tradition. After this liturgy, the people feel elevated and can forget all their life's cares because of the light, streaming from the music.

This was the last day that Collegium HOSANNA performed the newly-written liturgies in the foreign languages.

From the words of the polyglot Father Ambrose, from the assessments of the clergy, the worshipers, the critics and the guests, as well as from the singers, Elitza Hristova, the conductor of the Collegium, received numerous warm, heartfelt, sincere, and highest marks for her work as a conductor during this extremely hard - for her and also for the singers - week.

In the span of six days, she skillfully and perfectly guided the performances of the choir and established the connection between the priests and the singers with unshakeable precision, where the latter gained confidence and inspiration from her for accuracy, for a high artistic performance and a desire to infuse every such difficult score with the peculiarities and the fine and sophisticated expression of the Orthodox spirit. Under the radiant conducting of Elitza Hristova, the choir gave to all those, who were present, unique spiritual experiences.

Father Ambrose: Another miracle in this church! As you know, for almost six years there was a priest, an Englishman, an hieromonk, in our church. However, we have never held a whole liturgy in English. Just few small litanies. So, to you, singers from choir HOSANNA, we owe that miracle and we thank you most sincerely!

The fact that the English language is commonly studied for almost 15 years – from early childhood… is turning into something useful in days like this one. Probably here again we can see part of God’s providence since for nations of the Christian West to converse in English is something which easily unites us and gives us the opportunity to communicate to one another. Moreover, the tongue of the prayer is indeed the tongue of the heart so it is not that important whether or not we hold a service in English or in any other language.

I am certain that Collegium HOSANNA will write other interesting liturgies. Who knows what the future holds – Chinese, Mandarin, Arabic, or some other language from the numerous ones from the Indian
subcontinent! I propose the Marathi language since in Central India the number of Christian communities is rising and there will emerge the need of liturgies in many languages. I want to warmly thank you for all that you did so far!

I want to express my gratitude for these liturgies, every one of them created upon the subject of a specific language. As for tomorrow, I think that we have to give the absolute freedom to all who celebrate and sing to celebrate and sing in the language that they would like to because, in the end, the Saint brothers Cyril and Methodius had set out with no prejudices towards the people who had spoken in the languages they wanted. So, let’s give glory to the two Saint Evangelists for that as well.

This was in a way the fulfillment of a wish of mine. Since so many of us communicate amongst each other in English, I want to thank you that you helped creating one joint liturgy for all of Western Europe and for our believers who speak English, thank you and Many Years!
